Isolation when you work alone

Working alone is the freedom many people are after. It's also days without colleagues, decisions you carry on your own, and sometimes a silence that weighs on you. Isolation is one of the least-talked-about traps of self-employment.

A quiet trap

At first, the autonomy is intoxicating. No more pointless meetings, no more commuting, you organise your days however you want. Then the weeks without a real conversation pile up, and one day your motivation drops without you quite knowing why. Isolation creeps up silently, and that's what makes it hard to spot.

Why it touches almost everyone

On your own, there are no more colleagues, no more coffee breaks, no more small talk to give the day its rhythm. Working from home erases the line between work and home. And many don't dare say they feel lonely, because they "chose" this life. The subject stays taboo, even though it's very common.

Rebuilding connection, in practice

• Work outside your home a few days a week: a coworking space, a library, a café.
• Join a group or a community in your field, online or near you.
• Keep a fixed social appointment in the week, one that doesn't get dropped when you're swamped.
• Talk regularly with other freelancers. They understand what you're going through, and it feels good to talk to someone who knows.

Keeping a boundary helps too

Separating work from the rest protects your morale as much as your social life. A dedicated place when possible, set hours, and going out every day, even a little. When everything blends together at home, the mind never really switches off, and loneliness weighs heavier.

If the isolation slides towards a more lasting unease, a loss of drive that settles in, withdrawal, an underlying sadness, talking to someone close or to a professional really helps. You don't have to wait until things get very bad to look for support.
