"Go freelance, earn 10,000 a month from your bedroom, working four hours a week." This pitch is everywhere. It makes people dream, and it does harm, because it sells a shortcut that doesn't exist.

The dream they sell you

"Go freelance, earn 10,000 a month from your bedroom working a few hours a week." You've come across this pitch a hundred times already. Passive income, total freedom right away, almost effortless, within anyone's reach starting tomorrow. It's beautiful, it's simple, and it's false.

Why it works on you

If this message hooks you, it's not because you're naive. It targets a perfectly legitimate desire: to get out of a job that no longer suits you, to win your freedom, to take back control of your life. It often arrives just when you're most fed up. The trap isn't in your desire, which is healthy, it's in the promise pinned onto it.

What the shop window hides

You see the rare few who show off their success, never the thousands who tried the same method and gave up. That's survivorship bias: the shop window only shows the winners. And very often, the person selling you the recipe mainly earns by selling you the recipe, not by doing the job they claim to teach you. The figures on display are almost always unverifiable.

The hidden cost of the shortcut

Chasing the hack makes you skip the real foundations: solid know-how, real clients, a fair price. You lose time, sometimes money on overpriced courses, and you come out discouraged, believing the problem is you. When you simply followed a map that led nowhere.

Staying clear-eyed isn't giving up

Doubting these promises doesn't mean freelancing isn't for you. It's the opposite: it means you're taking it seriously. The good news is that reality, more demanding, is also far more solid than the fantasy.
